Wine and Food

Wine and food aren’t just about pairing it together and creating a wonderful taste and fusion of flavours. For me, it goes hand in hand with family get-togethers and as I age (like a good wine) those are the memories that I hold dearest to me.

The food I chose to cook relates to my youth, my own nostalgia that I want to share with you.

In my twenties, I wanted to open my catering business and the idea behind it was to create a kitchen of love and gathering.  I wanted something like Ma’s kitchen.  Ma is my grandmother and she is the root of my passion for cooking and wine/food pairing.

I remember visiting her house and she always had something on the go -in the winter usually soup or South African curry. We would all gather around the table with our cousins, aunties, uncle and parents whilst we waited for the final touches – jumping up to go in the kitchen to check out the food and see if Ma needed any help.

Then we would all sit down and have a homemade family meal together and the adults would sip wine and chat.  LOUD love and laughter.  Our family is not quiet and that is fine by me.  We laugh heartily, we love fully, and when we are annoyed or angry we are louder than the laughs.  And then we move on and meet next time.

I loved our family get-togethers. I loved hanging out with Ma. I loved seeing my aunty and uncle and all my cousins. I rarely passed up the opportunity to hang with my family, even if it meant not partying with my mates sometimes.

And at the heart of this gathering was the dining table, where we all sat, ate, drank (once I reached the legal age of 19 in Canada), and were merry.
